WebP is an image standard that ensures that images are very compressed while maintaining good quality.

Whether a shop offers images in WebP is now a ranking factor in Google.
But not all browsers can display WebP images. And not all merchants want to go to the trouble of uploading WebP images.

Our module is called up hourly by cronjob and creates additional WebP images from all images. Existing images are overwritten - in case you have changed something.
If a customer comes to the shop whose browser cannot display WebP, he or she is automatically shown the previous image (i.e. the jpg or png image you uploaded). The same applies to images for which the cronjob has not yet run, i.e. for which there is currently no WebP version.

And of course the images also appear in the sitemap.

Technical requirements:

  1. The server on which your shop is located must have a PHP-GD module installed and activated. Ask your hoster about this. Or we can simply test it. If it does not work, we will remove the module and charge you nothing.
  2. The server must allow the "find" command. Please ask the hoster.
  3. And of course, your hosting contract should include cronjobs. If not, you can also create an account on a site like cronjob.de.
  4. Of course, all images should be created correctly. "Image.jpg.jpg" is not allowed, nor is a .jpg image that has simply been renamed to .png. This also applies if the image should be displayed correctly in the shop. The analysis of each individual image, why it could not be converted to webp, is not included in the price.

Not update-safe, as we change the .htaccess file, among other things.

All product images are edited. At the end, the module starts again from the beginning, because it could be that you have changed images in the meantime. (Technically speaking - yes, we could also simply check whether an image has a new timestamp, but that would take just as long).

Depending on the server, our module manages approx. 25-50 images per run. You can run the cron job every minute.
So if you have a lot of images, let's say 350,000, that would be 7000 minutes or 116 hours.

So you have to decide for yourself whether the plugin is right for you or whether you don't have the patience for it (e.g. because you change your images every day).

This module does not work with Cloudflare protection activated and for unknown reasons not with All Inkl.

If you have uploaded an image e.g. as “.png” and want to replace it, please upload it again as “.png” and not as “.PNG” - otherwise it will not be converted.

If you want to check whether an image is already available in WebP, do ** NOT ** look in the source code, but simply right-click on the image and open it in a new window.

Is no longer required in the latest Modified 3 versions.
