Accessibility

Accessibility, a big issue in online retail!

From 29.06.2025, the “Barrier-Free Strengthening Act” (BFSG) will come into force, which is causing a great deal of excitement among retailers - for the vast majority of retailers, wrongly so.
This is because most retailers are likely to fall under the exemption for micro-enterprises.

This states that the BFSG ** DOES NOT ** apply to retailers who

- employ fewer than 10 people full-time (trainees do not count) AND
- have an annual turnover or annual balance sheet total of no more than 2 million euros.

This means that 80-90% of retailers can lie down again and stop reading newspapers with sensationalist headlines.

For the remaining 10%:

The cabinet of horrors is long:

  • retailers that use light gray lettering on a white background.
  • Buttons that are far too small and close together so that you always miss them on your cell phone.
  • Forms that you can't use with the TAB key.
  • Images that you can't read with a screen reader.
  • Stores that work with tables in fixed sizes that you can't enlarge.

There has been a law against this for some time, the Barrier-Free Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG). Public bodies have been obliged to make services provided electronically accessible since 2019. This will apply to retailers from June 29, 2025 (all B2C retailers with more than 10 employees AND sales

You should therefore make sure that

  • line and character spacing can be adjusted without changing the content
  • interactive elements such as menus or buttons can be read aloud by assistive technologies such as screen readers.
  • image descriptions can be read aloud
  • Forms are labeled and explained in a way that is easy to understand
  • Videos and audio tracks are subtitled
  • The text size can be changed
  • The page can be operated using the keyboard (i.e. without a mouse)
  • Clear headings are available
  • Videos and audio can be paused, stopped and hidden
